Students at our school come in with a love for the arts and a desire to become better artists. This hunger has prompted us to create a new art class, Fundamentals of Painting to help them further their artistic expertise and collaborate with other artists within our school.
Our school is one I would have dreamed to attend as a student, a school for the arts.
Students come from the Detroit metro area to our school because they have a love of visual, performance, and dramatic arts and strive to become better artists. As a public school just outside of Detroit and a school for artistic minds, we have a very diverse and accepting population. Our Transgender Support Group, LGBTQ, and Feminist clubs all seek to empower our students and strengthen our school's sense of community. This is not just a school I would have loved to attend as a student, but one I feel privileged to attend as a teacher.
My Project
My students need watercolor paint, brushes, and painting supplies for a new painting class. Up until this year students have had the opportunity to further their skills in visual arts through classes devoted to ceramics, drawing, jewelry making, sculpture, and digital imaging, but we have never had a class devoted to teaching painting. That is, until this year. Using the requested materials, it is our hope to teach students not just the fundamentals of painting, but also provide them with an opportunity to work with artists from other departments within out school.
Our school believes in the importance of empowering students through art.
Providing students with supplies for this class will help further the artistic community within our school as it will allow visual artists to collaborate with our school's writers. It will also provide students with opportunities to speak their minds and express themselves, which is something many high school students need, a voice.
