I am privileged to work with students like no others. Students at my school are aspiring artists from the Detroit area who are diverse not only in races and cultures, but also in gender identification and sexuality. In a typical high school, such diversity often breeds tension and hostility between various cliques; however, when polled, 70% of students stated that they continued coming to our charter school because they valued its sense of community. To begin each year, new students go through a week of mentoring by their peers in order to get acclimated to the school, their new schedules, and to break down walls created at their old schools. The first day of begins with a school-wide drum circle in the gymnasium. The all-encompassing sound swells out of the gymnasium doors, through the halls of the school, and announces to the neighborhood a new year of personal and academic growth has begun.
