My Students
I am blessed to have 32 fourth graders coming my way this upcoming school year, who will be working diligently to reach their individual reading goals. My school site is located in the Curtis Park neighborhood of Sacramento, but my school serves the Oak Park neighborhood families in Sacramento. Bret Harte Elementary School is a Title I diverse school, and almost 100% of the students are enrolled in the free and reduced school lunch program. The students are being assessed through running record assessments, small group reading support, and comprehension questions throughout each unit. Students are at various reading levels, but all of my students are needing challenging, diverse texts to support universal access to the grade-level curriculum. Every year, I enjoy choosing one unit I am passionate about teaching to my students, the Holocaust. I am very much looking forward to being able to complete novel studies this next school year on a subject which is essential to teach young generations to avoid history from ever repeating itself.
My Project
These two texts will allow my students to explore the Holocaust through both a fictional account and an autobiographical account of Anne Frank’s life during her time in the secret annex of her father’s workplace. Both of these texts will be used for whole-class discussion and dialogue to support individual reading comprehension, written comprehension, and collaborative project-based learning activities, including further research related to the Holocaust. Also, I would like to use both texts to further discuss and explore theme, central idea, and compare and contrast characters and ideas of both texts using small-group guided reading lessons, where students will have opportunities to respond using both oral and written communication to express individual ideas and inquiries related to the text.
