My Students

Who doesn't like to capture and display memories? By having a camera in the classroom, students' behaviors improve. Taking videos helps students see and reflect on their social interactions, so having new speakers can help amplify video playbacks through the computer.

My students attend a public school in San Francisco, and they are all on the Autism Spectrum.

Many of the students respond well when they know their pictures will be taken of their behaviors. With a new camera and speaker system, students will be able to see themselves in action and hear different social conversations being played back, so that they can learn from their mistakes and learn from others. They also benefit from picture schedules and pictures to help with effective communication. Having a camera in the classroom provides many opportunities to create social stories and social skills lessons with their own real pictures, helping to improve their understanding of expectations and rules.

My Project

Using real pictures for their picture schedules help them connect better with the expectations of the classroom, making their school day much more predictable. Instead of selecting random images from Google or using a Boardmaker software to create classroom expectations and rules, we would be able to use actual photos around the classroom that these students would be familiar with. Therefore, having a camera easily accessible in the classroom helps to support visual learners, and captures their special school moments to share with others. Using a speaker system paired with a computer or iPad will help amplify music, conversations, videos, and other sounds so that students will be able to hear and learn from what media offers.

Your donation for this project will really help provide the students with more visual support around the school and classroom to help them understand the expectations easier.

We would be able to capture and document students' behaviors and special achievements to show to parents via email, printed newsletters, or through bulletin board displays. When children see their own pictures, most feel a sense of excitement, and this is what we hope to accomplish with this new addition to the classroom.
