Autism: Using Video To Make Sense Of The Social World

My special education students who have Autism Spectrum Disorder need a digital video camera .

I am an elementary school Speech Language Pathologist working with a large population of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD.) I conduct weekly small group social cognitive groups with these students as well as conduct whole classroom social groups.

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder have difficulty navigating the confusing social world. Basic social skills that come naturally to most people need to be explicitly taught and reviewed on a regular basis with students with ASD. Students with ASD have specific difficulties understanding how their behavior/social skills affect other people around them.

It is quite powerful for students with ASD to watch themselves on video while they engage in activities such as roll playing of various social skills, during group problem solving activities, and during small group conversations. After watching the videos, the students can evaluate their behavior and the behaviors of their peers and then work on specific skills. Then, after the students have practiced various social skills over a period of time, they can re-watch the videos and verbally identify their areas of progress as well as that of their peers in the group. For my students, this instills pride and more confidence that they are improving in the area of social awareness.

Unfortunately, my personal digital video camera was recently stolen, and therefore my students have not been able to receive the benefits of this effective teaching tool. With your help, my students will be able to continue participating in valuable and fun learning activities that will improve their self-esteem and overall social skills.
