This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My school is an ethnically diverse Title I school in Georgia. Many of the students are receiving free lunch provided at school. Many of them live in nearby motels. I service students with special needs in a small group setting. Their family environment is very challenging for my students, and they are socially, economically deprived in many areas. They come to school expecting teachers to care, love, and provide for their needs.
Boardmaker is a complete special education platform that supports the education, communication, social and emotional needs of students with Autism.
My first-grade Autism student is a strong reader but he cannot understand or connect to the real world about what he read. He needed this board maker to access the lessons with the pictures to connect with his learning style.
All students deserve the right to receive appropriate education in the world. Not every student learns the same way, especially students with special needs. A famous psychologist O. Ivar Lovaas says “If they can’t learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn”. This is very true for students with Autism. Managing noise level is one of the many problems they face in the educational setting. They cannot learn like other students. They needed to be connected to their world through pictures.
The Boardmaker will enable the teacher to create the lessons using the Picture Communication Symbols (PCS).
This program will allow the teachers to access over 45,000 PCS to create the needed lessons for the special needs students. Students will easily access these materials and succeed in their learning. Using the right teaching model will fill the gap in special needs student learning.
