This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This school year marked the official launch for the school's first classroom designated for students with Autism and Developmental Cognitive Disorders. Because it is a brand-new program, there are several items that we still need to set up our classroom to support the significant needs of the scholars. I am requesting a shelf in order to intentionally set up a system to promote independence and foster organizational skills for my scholars with Autism. The shelf will be a clear hub for keeping academic task boxes and sensory items in a centralized and accessible location. Bins will be customized for individual students using clear labels and visuals and filled with tools and materials to work on academic goals or a sensory activity. The hope is that the scholars will learn to retrieve, use, and clean up their own materials as independently as possible as well as helping them to learn to keep track of their personal belongings.
Students with Autism and Cognitive Disorders also have many unique sensory needs.
The shelving unit will house many sensory tools we already have in the classroom, but also in considering sensory needs, I am requesting a floor lamp. The fluorescent lighting that comes standard in many schools can be too bright for students with Autism, affecting their ability to focus or attend in school. Our classroom makes use of using natural lighting from our windows as much as possible, supplemented with ambient lighting from floor lamps. Our scholars and support staff could really use one additional lamp.
Our scholars are amazing, and they work super hard every day. If this request is filled, it would make a huge difference in giving my scholars the environment they deserve. Thank you for your consideration!
