Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is similar to many ours, I have students that come from broken homes, low-income families, and different learners. What my students need is someone to guide them and be their best support for their lives. I am willing to be that teacher to provide the lessons, support and guides to their success.

What makes them special is that even with their background and statistics against them they are willing to work hard..

These students come everyday willing to learn, fail, and try again. They want to prepare for their future, they have dreams, want more for themselves, and need a better life.

Our students learn the same as every 4th graders, but also add to a second language. My students participate in a dual language program and working to be bi-literate. My students are 50% bilingual and proud to be able to speak to their grandparents, parents and many others in the community. My students know their background and are glad that they have the ability to speak more than one language.

My Project

My students need access to a thesaurus in the classroom to brighten their writing with more exciting and descriptive words! They need to expand their vocabularies and retire the "old, tired" words.

We are focusing on Writing this year and trying to become brilliant future authors.

While doing everything I can to promote a high level of success in writing, our classroom is in desperate need of some thesauruses to captive our readers. We participate in Writers Workshop practices which help us revise and edit our writing through the process of completing a final draft. When we are focusing on word choice, students love the process of switching out old, over-used words with something more descriptive and detailed. However, our classroom doesn't have a class set of thesauruses easily accessible. This limits their independence, whereas having a ready resource they can explore on their own would be meaningful and authentic to them.

While many students can brainstorm new, exciting words on their own, having an always-available resource, like a thesaurus, would really help them take their writing to the next level.
