Do you remember getting hooked on a genre or series of books as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for and then finally reading the next installment in your favorite series or discovering a new author you adore. I want my students to share that excitement and joy in discovering new books and different authors. I want to encourage students to be inquisitive, voracious readers who experience wonderful adventures in books and explore new authors.
I want to inspire students to be book-loving, avid readers, and enthusiastic learners.
I used to teach first grade. It's easy to get a first grader excited about reading. I now teach sixth and seventh grade reading. It's really difficult to get reluctant readers excited about picking up a book in middle school. Our school library is an essential resource for all students, not just mine. I want to provide all students with the opportunity to delve into new genres and introduce them to new authors.
My Project
This will be our school's first ever Authors' Day and Reading Festival! We will make all of these novels available to our student body. We have invited each of these published young adult authors to come and share their wisdom, talk about their motivation, express the process of getting published, and answer any questions the kids have about developing, writing, and publishing novels.
Students will have the opportunity to actually meet the person who wrote the book(s) they read, talk one-on-one with multiple published authors, and acquire autographs from these talented and inspiring writers.
This is an incredible experience for our 800+ students, the staff, and the authors involved. This provides a wildly unique dynamic - to be able to meet the person who actual wrote the books that the students read. Students can then inquire about specific characters, settings, and story lines. This establishes a real life connection between readers and authors.
