Author's Alley: A Second Grader's Dream Writing Space.
My students need a tabletop writing center with student organizers, paper, pencils, folders, journals and a digital camera to nurture their love of writing.
Writing is a skill essential to a students progress through the upper grades, college and her/his career. Sadly its one many people never master.
With an Authors Studio, from Donors Choose, my seven year old students will have an opportunity to become creative, engaged writers in an area designed for just that.
My 23 second grade students live in a culturally diverse community and love learning.
Mine is an inclusive classroom with a wide range of abilities in all areas including writing. Our school is on the border of a large urban city that is suffering, as many are, with cuts to funding and limited school supplies in the classrooms.
My Project
Our Authors Studio will have the supplies necessary (that we do not have due to limited funds). My students will have everything necessary to write in a variety of genre, both matching their interest levels and stretching their minds.
This portable studio makes the best use of the space we have and offers a variety of writing options meeting the diverse needs and abilities of my inclusive classroom. This center will contain community journals (where children can write about a variety of subjects that appeal to seven year olds including sports, family, friends, dance, scouting, etc.), an assortment of paper, prompts, resources, pencils and pictures. Folders for each author's work in progress will keep each child organized. A digital camera will be used for prompts, freeze frame writing and graphics for stories. The Authors Studio will be a place where children can be excited about writing, while exceeding the goals of the second grade writing curriculum.
Good writing is critical to the future success of most children, in their higher education and future careers.
Having the ability to write also enables a person to feel confident about their abilities in general. Learning how to write well in second grade will influence the future of every child in my classroom. Having fun as a writer in a special Authors Studio will be the first step to loving the process. Loving the process will be the next step in becoming a lifelong writer!
