My students need a document camera.

My Students

Do you remember Spanish class when you felt overwhelmed with classwork or thought to yourself "I will never get this"... or that trip to France when you felt lost, different, inadequate or scared because you did not speak or understand the language? This is how my students feel on a daily basis.

My school currently has 67 Limited English Proficient students in 17 classrooms in grade levels K-4.

Most are low-income or homeless status. Many are also students with special needs of various levels. Some were born in the U.S., but speak only their first language in the home. Some are from war or disaster torn countries and are refugee status. Most have responsibilities outside of school that some of us would never imagine a child having. Most were born in another country and sometimes miss their homeland. Many have limited, or significantly interrupted formal schooling, which creates large gaps in not only education, but also sometimes social skills. I can confidently say that all of them are extremely happy and proud to be in the United States and they are determined learners. My biggest fear for them is that they will feel inferior due to language weaknesses and give up on their education.

My Project

As a teacher of students with limited English language proficiency, I am required to teach them not only English as a second language, but also the content that they would get in the mainstream classroom in order to pass vigorous state assessments. This includes phonics and reading instruction, science, social studies and math. With low funding, most of our resources are samples that come with only one student copy. Language acquisition is most quickly accomplished through lots of authentic learning experiences engaging the senses. With only black and white copies of student materials, this is difficult. I am requesting a 3D color document camera for my classroom. Being able to project rich, colorful 3D images and manipulatives onto the large whiteboard for the whole class will more efficiently engage all of my students, not just the ones in the front. This camera will make an invaluable difference in my classroom and can be used with every single lesson.

My students inspire me every day with their perserverance, enthusiasm, strength and determination.

I want to do the same for them with high-quality, efficient and engaging instruction. This technology will speed up the content and language learning process, allowing me to fit more in so my students can master more material in less time. This will enable them to pass state assessments, become competent communicators and graduate from high school to become productive, active members of our community.
