Authentic Engineering (STEM) Requires (Kid-Friendly) Power-tools!

Help me give my students two ChompSaws to build solutions (prototypes) for their engineering problems. These saws will provide a safe and authentic tool to create prototypes using cardboard.

My Project

My students ask every week when we will have our next "Maker Day." Maker Days provide students the opportunity to engage in the Engineering Design Process (EDP) that begins with defining a problem to be solved or solution that can be improved. My goal is to provide a more authentic learning environment and we need child-safe cutting tools to support the process. As students work to solve a problem identified in a story, a read-aloud, a science lesson or social studies unit they are also developing important skills inherent in engineering systems--improvement as part of the process. While working in the EDP they figure out the criteria & constraints of their project and brainstorm solutions. Importantly, this process builds resiliency and instills the idea of continual improvement. Like most students my children are highly motivated to work with their hands but have limited access to hands-on tools that take the students through the entirety of the EDP to an actual solution or prototype; when it comes to the steps after the brainstorming and designing they are often left with the standard, child friendly supplies to create.

ChompSaws will give students a real power tool they can use safely, opening up authentic engineering experiences that weren’t accessible to this age group before.

Research consistently shows that project-based, hands-on STEAM learning increases student engagement, deepens conceptual understanding across disciplines, and develops the creativity, critical thinking, and persistence that my learners need.

Funding this project will expand access to meaningful engineering and design experiences for students and allow them to take a thought-out solution or improvement to a problem and create a prototype that fulfills all of the steps of the Engineer Design Process while developing resilience and builds understanding of problem solving and improvement as a continuous cycle.
