My Students

Statistics show that by middle school students' interest in science begins to wane. Science instruction is often inconsistent taking a backseat to literacy and math. My goal is to help students see that science is the study of the world around them and that they have the power to affect it.

My students are typical 12-14 year old boys and girls attending a public school in a very diverse Massachusetts community.

They, like most teens live in a highly mediazed world. Meaning, most of the information they receive comes from sources (media) other than the classroom. We as educators, are competing with a tremendous amount of information and misinformation which often leads to misconception. Combine this reality with the reality of poverty, language, culture and a relentless master called standardized testing and learning about animal classification or the Periodic Table can seem useless. I believe that all my students want to learn. In order for them to learn, I want to capture the excitement they had for science as youngsters. Part of our task as teachers is to make the subject matter relevant. To accomplish this students need to be exposed to authentic, current science ideas. Scholastic Science World does this on a monthly basis.

My Project

Our classroom was fortunate enough to receive a subscription to Science World last year so I saw how they devoured every issue. The writing was at a level most students can access. The articles are of high interest so they want to read. Included in the subscription is access to online support and short video clips. A must in any classroom in the 21st Century. An example of how these articles promote critical thinking happened in my 8th grade class. After reading about the plight of the tiger in Asia and how poaching is affecting its population, my students began to think critically. One question was, "Why is this allowed to go on?" This brought up the discussion of economy and poverty in 3rd world countries. Another more distressing question was, "Why do we need tigers?" This led to discussions about food chains and the ethics of man subjugating nature. Showing me that higher order thinking skills are possible if the material inspires.

Donating to this request will help my students combine science and literacy and give them the opportunity to think for themselves about real world science.

Reading, writing, and discussing are important skills for scientists to master and in my opinion this magazine supports all of these skills. Textbooks are OK for facts, but most are outdated and some are difficult for all students to access. Science World has articles of different lengths and lots of photos and new vocabulary.
