My students need a suitable listening center to aide their literacy development in Kindergarten.
The best memory of my childhood was when my grandmother would lay me down at night and read me a story to put me to bed. About 50% of the students in my classroom lack this experience in their own homes. A decent listening center will do so much good for a few kindergarten children.
My students attend a classroom where 75% of my class qualifies for free/reduced lunch.
Reading logs come to school with only four books written on them. Although excited and eager to learn, most of the potential is stifled due to the lack of parental involvement. They are extremely lovable and empathetic to others. Yet most of the students crave positive reinforcement for simple tasks. I couldn't imagine anyone not falling in love with my classroom and the personalities it encompasses. If given a chance, there is nothing they could not accomplish.
Our classroom is lacking a sufficient listening center. The students in my classroom lack the at home support to building literacy, which is so crucial in Kindergarten. With this center in the classroom, students will be able to listen to stories independently within a daily routine to build their vocabulary along with developing a love of reading. Our school has a variety of audio books, but since we lack these crucial materials we are unable to take advantage of what the school has to offer. This could be the extra step some of my students need to achieve so much more in the classroom.
With recent funding being the way it is, aside from the classroom essentials, I will be unable to afford to get this for my classroom.
I often read to my students during the day and they are so enthralled during story-time that I know what the availability of a listening center will propel my students further in their learning. Feeling personally accountable for their achievement drives me to ask very humbly for assistance in this endeavor to supply my children with every possible opportunity.
