One aspect of the project is to have the students study plants closely under a microscope. High quality hand held digital microscopes are available for low cost these days. Thanks to your generous donation, I was able to purchase one handheld microscope for each student. Here on the island of Kauai we are blessed with warm weather and can grow vegetables all four seasons. That means that my students can maintain their school yard garden all school year! We have grown pumpkin, lettuce, beans sweet potato and kalo. Thanks for making this experience possible. \r\n\r\nMy hope is that I can inspire my fourth grade students to be part of the process to make Kauai more self sustainable, a place were we grow more of our own food. This was something that was true for hundreds of years on the past, and if we can inspire enough teachers and students, can possible be true once again. The majority of my students are native Hawaiians and this project provides them with a powerful inspiration for the future.\r\n\r\nEven more important, growing food plants opens up all sorts of career possibilities for my students in fields that do no require that the leave the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii is in great need of biologists, teachers, doctors, farmers, etc. Who better than the children of native Hawaiians who have lived here for centuries?\r\n\r\nMy students have taken seriously all of the aspects of this project, from seed sorting, weeding and harvesting the vegetables.
