Our library serves all students in our Pre-K through fifth grade elementary school. Each class comes to the library once a week to hear a great story and/or strengthen their information literacy skills. All students have the opportunity to check out books both during their weekly library time and throughout the day as their class schedule allows. For a number of students in our Title 1 school, our library is their primary source for accessing new books. The public library is on the other side of town and is a long walk for families with small children who do not have a car. Despite the fact that many of our students live in poverty, the students at my elementary have big hearts. They are kind. They are optimistic. They are insightful, and they are funny. They are the type of people who give you hope.
My Project
Audio-books are great for motivating students to become readers. They provide an opportunity for students to strengthen their comprehension skills even when they struggle with decoding skills. The Me Readers included in this project are high interest - My Little Pony, Star Wars, Superheroes! - and super engaging with action packed story lines and sound effects. As students listen to the story and follow along in the book, they will not only be entertained, they will also be strengthening their reading skills! These captivating stories will allow students to independently enjoy a book, which will help them gain confidence in their reading ability even if they struggle with literacy skills.
Once students discover how much fun reading can be - and they realize that THEY CAN DO IT - they will be hooked!
The supplies included in this project will help me create an audio-book station in the library that will draw in reluctant readers. From there, I will recommend additional titles to keep their interest in reading piqued and slowly introduce more challenging or varied titles to help nudge students along as they grow into more experienced readers. Developing an audio-book center in our library will be an essential seed to helping our students bloom as readers!
