This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Beginner ESL students CAN understand and engage with complex English texts. To do this, they need to be able to read, see, and hear the words that make the story come alive. Having individual audio players in the classroom will allow students to make that leap.
My students come to the classroom with a wealth of knowledge and a diversity of experiences.
They are all ESL students, coming from 7 different countries and speaking 4 different languages at home. In terms of English ability, they range from newcomers to advanced speakers and writers.
My challenge as the teacher of this tremendously talented group of young people is to find ways to tap into their wide potential and help them make the leap to mastering rigorous high school level materials and themes.
My students love to discuss current events. They love to analyze exciting works of fiction. They love to make breathtaking connections between literature and their own lives. Most of all, they love to feel successful in the face of challenges that can sometimes feel stacked against them. These resources can help that desire become reality.
My Project
My students need 5 iPod shuffles and 5 audio splitters to allow them to listen to books multiple times to improve literacy and English language skills. With these audio players, I will be able to transform the way I organize my classroom and challenge my students. They will have more control over identifying what they do and do not understand. They will be able to make connections between the spoken and written word and improve their literacy. They will be able to experience literature in a format they feel comfortable in, and therefore have the chance to grow to love the stories and their meanings. They will be able to work in pairs to analyze, understand, and find evidence in the spoken text. As a result, I will be able to both grant my students more independence and ask more of them in my classroom.
