At the Korner of the Konversation: Buzzing About Black History

Help me give my students books, presentation boards, and paper for an opportunity to explore and process the importance of Black History Month at KMS!

This project expired on June 3, 2023.

My Project

KMS students are Black History! Our school is located in the historic Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, DC and has a history of civil rights and providing opportunities and educational access for all residents.

This project will enable students to reflect upon the history that has created a foundation for their learning and become empowered to share their stories with others.

The goal is to encourage other students to embrace and create history as Hornets! The At the Korner of the Konversation effort will help us achieve that goal with a focus on Black History Month and diversity and inclusion education.

The materials listed in the cart will provide an opportunity for me to accomplish two major goals with my middle grade level students. First, I would finally have the opportunity to begin establishing a classroom. At this current time, I have the space (bookshelves, carts, etc.) to place reading materials and label various genres of readings but I have not had the resources to purchase multiple copies (1-5) so that each student can have access. The books will be located in an area where students can select, read and return them after our weekly 15-20 minute free read period. All grade level teachers are implementing opportunities for students to read hard copy materials in addition to completing tasks through I-Ready. The second goal is aligned with tasking students to make formal presentations about what they are reading or have read. The cart includes items such as posterboards, construction paper, pens, copy paper, and markers for students to create visual aids and make presentations on a particular topic or reading. Their completed posters will also be displayed on our floor lobby and on the first floor lobby.
