This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My name is Crystal Korotkov. I just graduated from University of South Florida with my bachelors in Elementary Education. I was offered a position as a fourth grade teacher at a Title I school a few weeks later in a rural area near Tampa, FL. The students at my school are coming in from very low socioeconomic backgrounds and to be honest, are coming to school to have their basic needs met first. I plan to do that for these students. I want to have hair brushes, snacks, blankets in my classroom for my students. I realize their basic needs must be met first in order to learn. I am going love these kids as if they were my own and meet their needs (emotionally and academically) I know that all kids need is a little love, a little hope, and someone who believes in them. I know this because I was one of those students. I want to create a classroom environment that feels welcoming, inclusive, positive, nurturing and loving for my students.

My Project

My students need a rug where they can gather. My classroom rug is at the very front of my classroom and will be used all throughout the day. We will begin by gathering around it to greet each other and acknowledge each other everyday. I am very passionate about building a strong classroom community and strong relationships both student-student and student-teacher. I also believe in flexible seating. My students are coming from hard backgrounds and I will do whatever it takes for my students to succeed. They will use the pillows to read on, write and do math. They will have the option to lay down on the carpet if they would like. The balance ball will be especially helpful for students who need to be moving while learning. The pillows allow students to find a quiet place in the classroom and work in their own area. My project sets my students up for success for learning in my classroom.
