Assistive Technology: Making Writing And Math Accessible To All Learners!
My students need technology to help successfully transfer their thoughts into clear, concise writing. Assistive technology is important for my English Language Learners and Special Education students since the writing process can be very stressful.

My Students
My amazing school is a Title 1 school located in Brooklyn, NY. My school is an outlier in our district. Unlike the other schools in the neighborhood our school budget is always tight. We frequently run out of supplies like copy paper, printer ink and pencils. Our parents aren't able to provide donations to the school PTA like many of the other schools in our district.
The majority of my students are first generation immigrants hailing from such locations as Bangladesh, Mexico, Ukraine, Yemen and China.
Our school is a cultural melting pot where at least 15 different languages are spoken! Since we are a Title I school, most students receive free breakfast, snacks and lunch. Although we don't get many donations from our parents, our PTA has managed to offer fantastic after school clubs and art opportunities to our students, and they have figured out ways to extend our budget so that many students can participate in these programs free of charge.
My Project
Since many of my students are English Language Learners and/or students with disabilities I've found that using technology has helped remove many barriers when it comes to accessing the curriculum. The general population will also benefit from these Chromebooks because it will help to advance and enrich their learning as well. The entire class will benefit from additional technology in the classroom.
I intend to use the Chromebooks with headphones to help students improve reading fluency by allowing students to record themselves reading passages and listening to themselves improve overtime.
Additionally, the writing process will be less strenuous for specific students when using the Chromebook and headphones with a word prediction program and by speaking into a headset to help organize their ideas on paper. Learning math facts on these Chromebooks using a fun interface will increase student engagement.
There are specific websites that are geared for ELLs to help reinforce and introduce vocabulary and build on their knowledge. All of these will be available with the additional technology in the classroom. These computers and headsets will be used in centers, or during independent work time.
Ultimately, these computers will help to prepare self-directed learners so they can learn through experience and without feeling self-conscious while also exposing them to skills (typing, word processing programs, Google slides, etc.) that will help them keep up with other students who have daily access to technology. I have witnessed how computers and specific apps have helped grow student confidence and improve reading, writing and math fluency!
