My students need Magic, Magnetic and gel writing boards, journals and various writing tools and paper to help them become aspiring, fluent young writers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low income, high poverty area. The school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City where students live in apartment houses. 85% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunches. The students are served breakfast, lunch and even an early dinner (for those students that stay for the after school program). Many of our students come to school hungry and rely on the school meals for their daily source of nutrition.
I have 18 students of different ethnic backgrounds.
I have 7 students who do not speak English. The students speak Creole, Arabic, and Spanish. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, Arabic, and Jamaican. For the majority of the students, this is their first educational experience. Many of them have not heard stories being read aloud. Many students do not have educational toys, such as blocks, and LEGO blocks at home.
The students come to my classroom to a place where they are comfortable: socially and emotionally. A place where they learn.
My Project
I am trying to give the students exciting tools for inspiring them to go to the writing center. The space saver will make the writing table that I currently have more attractive and space efficient. The magnetic boards are a unique way to get the students to practice writing their names and letters.
Beginner writers can be succussful if they have a space dedicated for writing with many different and exciting tools.
To encourage writers, we must let the children draw and write with various tools, writing utensils and paper. As well, we must encourage them to tell their story. "Every picture tells a story. Tell me your story." These tools are the dawning of the children to become fluent writers.
