I teach a first grade class at PS 146 in the Bronx and it has been amazing to see the amount of growth my students have made from September, moving from being unable to match letters with their sounds to writing personal narrative stories. As the students continue to push forward I would like to provide them with some beautiful resources and space to write in. I believe that a beautiful writing center would create the excitement needed to push them to the next level in their writing.
I am requesting two items. I am requesting a piece of furniture (other than the broken desk I currently store supplies on) which is student friendly and able to house all of the writing materials (different papers, folders, as well as manipulatives and centers); and secondly, a pre-made writing center which comes with all the materials needed for a small group to work on their writing in a more structured way during independent writing time.
All students in the class would benefit from this writing center and my hope is that it would continue to grow a passion for writing in them. Many observers to my room have noted how exciting it is to see such young children excited about writing, especially because of the fact that many of them are still in the very earliest stages of emergent writing.
I know that if my students learn to love writing at age six it will make a lasting impact on the rest of their educational career. It would be a true gift to give them a memorable space for writing that they would remember fondly in the years to come. Please help these young writers to further develop their skills and passions for writing.
