My students need these mathematical tools in order to perform large calculations and engage in rigorous grade-level mathematical tasks.

Everyday, I teach 90 scholars who are motivated to be the best mathematicians that they can be. As a teacher, it is sometimes difficult to think of new and refreshing ways to teach the same math skills and concepts. I want my scholars to discover how math connects to their real-life experiences.
The scholars we have at our school come from all different parts of the city.
Like many schools in the city, we host a group of scholars who are resilient, determined, and motivated to excel academically in spite of their personal challenges. In many ways, our school is like one big family. Our teachers maintain close relationships with the families of our scholars and our scholars trust in us to provide them the tools they need to be productive citizens in their respective communities. As you can see from the picture, my scholars have the ability to work hard and create anything if given the necessary resources and tools. At our school, my scholars actively participate in debate club tournaments, athletics, and the arts. Considering the limited amount of resources we have school-wide, I am fortunate that our scholars still maintain the desire to achieve academically.
Throughout the course of the school year, my students has engaged in a multitude of rigorous mathematical tasks that required a great deal of brainpower and perseverance. At times, the work has been overwhelming for them, partly because of the fact that the size of the numbers they are calculating require the use of a calculator. Over the course of the long school year, calculators accidentally get misplaced or end up malfunctioning due to frequent use by students. That being said, if students do not have access to a calculator for those larger calculations, many of them end up disengaging from the work, which consequently leads to a decline in their Math grades.
Rulers are equally as important as the calculators because they are needed to make accurate measurements of geometric figures.
