Arts Survey Class Needs Pictures To View

My students need the 24 books that make up "The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern" for their required Arts Survey class.

My Students

Art. From Egyptian Art to Michelangelo, Da Vinci to Rembrandt and Picasso to Warhol, these names bring forth artistic images to those who have seen them. I have some wonderful kids who need some "pictures and words" so they can also see and appreciate the works of the "masters" of art.

Our kids are in a high poverty, rural area in Alabama.

(Yeah, that narrowed it down, didn't it!) Due to the pressure of standardized testing in our state, many things have been by the wayside from 1st grade through 8th grade. There are no opportunities for art exploration until 9th grade, Arts Survey, where we cover four hefty areas of the arts in 18 weeks! This class is the first (even if late) opportunity for our students, many who come from not-so attractive home lives, to escape the real world and journey into a world of beauty and emotion.

My Project

Arts Survey is a required class that covers 1)music, 2)drama, 3)dance and 4)art. 1) I'm a music ed guy, so #1 is covered. 2) A colleague has graciously agreed to assist with drama (and I taught Drama for 3 years), so check #2. 3) My 20 year old daughter is a dance instructor...... and owes me for the first 20 years of life, so #3 is covered. That leaves #4. My last art class was in college...... 26 years ago. I purchased this book to reacquaint myself with art and quickly found that it would be an ideal text for this class! It covers art from cave drawings through the masters and up to modern day art. Of course, no funds for any textbooks in Alabama. Help! These books would be able to be used in coming years. Help us put art in our kids' hands.

In rough economic times, one of the first cuts we see are the arts.

Luckily, we're not cutting at our school. However, to cover the curriculum and to give our students as much of the arts as we can with this class, we need your help. I've invested approximately $200 in art videos. Please help us invest just a little more in the art education of our kids.
