Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With an ever growing emphasis on "rigorous academic instruction" our students (especially our students with disabilities) do not have enough opportunities to express themselves creatively. Here is one chance to change that.
My students are five amazing people with autism ranging in age from 16-21.
They attend a self-contained school for special needs students in a high needs, urban public school. My students all have difficulty with language and communication but they are very aware of their world and like to socialize using the knowledge they have gained in school. They continue to grow and improve each day and I often find myself surprised by how much they know and the potential that exists within each student.
My Project
I am requesting art supplies, including easels, canvases and paints to start an art club in my class for my students and interested students from other classes. I plan on teaching my students to work independently, to express themselves artistically and to communicate and comment on their own work and that of their friends.
Art education is important for all students.
For students whose disability includes communication deficiencies, it is increasingly important that we give them multiple channels to express themselves, to form connections to their worlds and to have work they can be proud of. Your donation will help to make that a reality for my students.
