My students are 6 amazing people with autism ranging in age from 14-21. They attend a self-contained school for special needs students in a high needs, urban public school. The majority of my students come from low income, working class families and many are raised by single parents. The old adage "When you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism" definitely applies to my students. As far as cognitive and academic abilities, my class ranges from nonverbal, non-reading students to students that communicate verbally, albeit to a limited degree and can read and write on about a third grade level. Two of my students have no functional verbal language and communicate primarily with pictures, picture symbols, and physical gestures. We are constantly working to increase our students ability to express themselves to improve their quality of life.
