Arts And The Imagination...

My students need 19 different art supplies such as finger paint, watercolors, paint brushes, foam craft shapes, and chenille stems.

With standardized testing, kindergarten is no longer the world we remember. Although my combined regular/special education kindergarten classroom is full of life, instead of socializing in the kitchen area or being creative with blocks, I am teaching my students from the moment they walk in, to the second the dismissal bell rings.

Therefore, I try to incorporate creativity and imagination in all aspects of our day, whenever possible. Unfortunately, teaching in an extremely impoverished neighborhood also means that our school has very few resources for anything outside the pure academics. My students are limited to crayons and construction paper when it comes to art projects, yet show a lot of talent and enthusiasm for our crafts.

If I only had paints, glitter, yarn, and many other arts and crafts materials, my students' talent, creativity and imagination could flourish. More arts and crafts would give my students, especially my special needs students, the opportunity to share themselves with the rest of the students.
