Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Statistics show that LGBTQ+ students tend to have decreased mental health (70% of LGBTQ youth stated their mental health was poor over the past year) and are at an increased risk of self-harm and suicide (42% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year). According to The Trevor Project's National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health (2021), youth who had access to spaces that affirmed their sexual orientation and gender identity reported lower rates of attempting suicide. Our goal at GSA is to ensure that students on our campus feel that their identities are affirmed, and they can feel comfortable expressing themselves while at school. Enter the GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance)! These students are either members of the LGBTQ+ community or are allies. My students are eager to learn about and show support to their LGBTQ+ peers.
My Project
Due to district and campus budget cuts, there is unfortunately no funding available for after-school clubs such as GSA, so everything that we get for our students is either out-of-pocket or relies on outside donations.
Our students meet once a week and are craving the ability to create and support!
This project will give students the ability to make pronoun pins (for themselves, their peers, and teachers who are interested). We hope that these pins will help to normalize providing pronouns whether a person is transgender or not. We are also requesting beads and string to create bracelets and other wearable crafts for our LGBTQ+ students and allies.
The items that we've requested are all items that our students have specifically requested to be used while we are having our GSA meetings. We hope that working together to create these items as a group will help to build a stronger community among our GSA students as well as helping them feel more comfortable in their identities when we are outside of the club. Inclusivity is important to all our students and helping them identify and helping others feel more comfortable with chosen pronouns is a big step in the right direction!
