This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Art journaling has been in the making for the last several months for my students. I have been dying paper on the weekends, going to thrift shops in search of ephemera and reaching out to my colleagues to help build my supplies. The bones of this project are established, but I am now in need of the extras that will “beautify” my kids' journals.

I teach English 11 to special education students as well as Reading to students with dyslexia.

Reading and writing for this population is beyond intimidating. A tremendous amount of time is put into building relationships and trust at the beginning of the year; as I am asking these kids to be vulnerable in front of me as well as their peers in a subject that they struggle with. As a high school educator, it is quite common to have students that are coping with trauma and all sorts of anxiety. Post Covid, teachers are dealing with this at an alarming rate.

I want my kids to find their voice, to have an outlet. With the items that I am requesting it will allow my students to personalize journals to generate inspiration needed to write that doesn’t have a grade attached to it. This project will allow my students the opportunity to intrinsically create something for pleasure that doesn’t have a grade attached to it. Journaling is a creative way to alleviate anxiety that so many students are experiencing and simultaneously improve their writing.
