My Students
"Be the change you want to see in the world," Gandi. My job is to provide opportunities in and out of my classroom so students are able to have a well rounded educational experience. This year our school had large budget cuts that have created a challenge to buy supplies and artist in residences.
Our High School has around 1500 students.
I teach students in grades 9-12 who have never had art before and some who have had several classes under their belt. Visual art is one of the most expensive classes to teach because of the supplies but it is one of the most valuable classes. Not only do you get to be creative and expressive but, you learn problem solving skills and become a critical thinker. These are qualities that my students learn while they are in my classroom.
My Project
My students will be working with a professional ceramic artist from Minneapolis. She has been a professional artist for over 15 years and has studied under a talented ceramic artist by the name of Randy Johnson. She is planning to teach both hand-building and throwing lessons. I offer ceramic one and ceramic two courses where students start to develop basic ceramic techniques. If they find that pottery is a passion they may even participate in an independent study to continue their ceramic career. I know that having an artist in residence and good supplies will make a world of a difference. Visual arts in general helps to develop a sense of self, problem solving and critical thinking skills which are vital in their adult life. Visual arts has inspired me and hopefully will also spark inspiration in my students to continue to be creative in their future.
The experience of having a professional artist will not only impact my students and what they learn from the artist technically but their work will be displayed multiple times through the year in a district art show and at a beautiful library for their neighborhood show.
As an artist being able to have your friends, family and community see your work is the icing on the cake. I know that this experience may seem small but down the road it will be life changing.
