Artful Reading Necklaces

My Students

My third-grade students are best described as high octane. They are creative, inspiring, and full of life. As their teacher, I strive to provide a learning environment that is challenging without being intimidating. We celebrate hard work and personal growth. Our classroom is a place where communication, collaboration, community, and creativity are nurtured.

We pride ourselves on lifting each other up, as we strive toward a common goal of developing students who are critical thinkers, innovators, and role models.

We have a long way to go toward achieving this goal; however, with your help, I know we can make it. In our class, we live by the motto, "The good you do will come back to you!"

My Project

We would like class sets of Peter Brown's books, The Wild Robot and The Wild Robot Escapes, to inspire incredible art while building literacy and social skills. The children will read the books and, using the chart paper and pencils, create large flow maps outlining the sequence of events of each text. In addition, the children will use the glue sticks (and construction paper we already have) to create their own robot artwork inspired by Peter Brown.

The children will use the bottle cap pendants, chains, and epoxy stickers to create wearable art galleries of the books they read.

Each child will receive individual bottle caps to decorate. The hole punches will empower the children to punch paper in the perfect size and shape to insert in the caps. The epoxy stickers will seal their work before attaching the pendants to their necklace. As children read more books throughout the year, they will create illustrated tags out of card stock that represent the book, to add to their necklaces. By the end of the year, the children will have these incredible, wearable art museums that chronicle the incredible books they have read all year long.
