My Students

Our school is a Title I school in a Title I district, meaning over fifty percent of our students 600 students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We are the largest of the four high schools in the Lawrence County School District.

We are a rural school with limited jobs available in our county.

Recently our county's largest employer shutdown leaving over one thousand people unemployed. Most of my students have been directly impacted by this shutdown through family members being unemployed. This has been a difficult life lesson for them and they are realizing the value in education, having skills and making good financial decisions. Our community needs something to be proud of that identifies who we are as a school.

We recently added Art to our high school electives. We had such success and interest after the first year we have had to expand our class offerings.

This project will aid in supporting the large need for materials and art supplies.

My Project

Research demonstrates that involvement in the arts, especially low-income students, correlates with higher levels of attainment in secondary education and post-secondary schooling.

With these art materials, our students will have the opportunity to develop healthy self-expression.

In the era of social media, the arts provide a safe mode of expression and aid in developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, lateral thinking, complex analysis, and critical thinking. All of these skills assist in developing well-rounded young adults.

Regardless of the career path our students choose, a study in the arts aids in building an appreciation for culture, diversity, and expression.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
