Many students are worried about making mistakes which ruins their piece of art work. As they are learning it is difficult for them to visualize a new way of seeing their design. The iPad provides a way for them to take a picture of their artwork and make endless changes and edits without fear.
My students are in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades which are ages 12-15.
This is their first legitimate academic instruction in art production. The school is a high achieving school where parents are very involved with their students' education. The students are eager to learn and push themselves to greater success. Our school puts great emphasis on learning the arts along with math, science and English.
The students come from many different economic and many ethnic backgrounds . When they come together in our school they become one cohesive group. They work together and are very kind with each other.
My Project
I provide in my class a variety of learning experiences centered around mastering the foundations of art. I encourage and reward experimentation, creativity and good craftsmanship.
I teach these premises on a variety of surfaces with many different media and materials. This is why the canvasses are so important to my class. Many of the students have never used anything but paper for their artwork. The canvas allows them to experiment and to see how a different surface reacts to the mediums they use.
The iPad is so essential to my students' art. My students are very typical in the fact that when they first start producing their own art they can be very stiff, unimaginative, and scared. By providing access to an iPad, students can take a photo of their unfinished artwork and create endless possibilities of creative new ideas. They then can choose a different and more exciting one to finish their piece.
This is the technology age and these students are comfortable with it.
Having an iPad in the classroom excites the students. It allows them to get excited about being creative and experimenting. Art has moved to technology and these students will have the advantage of using technology while mastering traditional art techniques. They will combine the two in a brand new way which can spark more artistic voice for their generation. Who knows what they will create?
