One of my art rules is, "Put Your heART into Art." I tell my students I start them out with an A in Art, but it is up to them to keep that A. One of the ways to get an A in art is to put their heart into whatever they create and their creation will be beautiful!
My students range from second to fifth grade and attend a Title I public elementary school in North Miami Beach, Florida in a primarily Haitian community with low-income families.
I teach approximately 400 students a week. Their academic abilities range from several learning disabilities to gifted. We produce a large amount of art work throughout the year and I enter many students' art work in local, district and state contests and in district art exhibits, but that still leaves a lot of beautiful children's art work not showcased. My project is to have an art auction to benefit our school's art department. Art work can be bid on for $1 to $10. The art auction "Art Through the heART of a Child" and be held in the art room and media center as an event with an opening reception on a school night inviting families, faculty, staff and community. Art auction pieces would be put online on school's website ahead of time, and students will create an invitation also posted online.

Students will use the art supplies to create art work for the art auction. They will create art work as a follow up to art lesson on famous artists and their styles as well as art work depicting art concepts and techniques they have learned in art class. The mats will be used to frame the art work and students will learn how to make their art work look professional. They will also learn how to help set up an art event to showcase their art work...what preparation, planning and execution it takes to make the event a success. The art easels will be used to display student art work ongoing throughout the school year at special events such as Open House, Holiday programs, etc. Students will take pride in their creations and value the worth of their art work because someone is actually willing to pay for their art. Families, faculty, staff and community can enjoy seeing beautiful art work on display. "Art Through the heART of a Child" will surely benefit our school's art department.
"Art Through the heART of a Child" donations will improve our art classroom by having art students work towards a common goal to help their school gain recognition through displaying the beautiful art they can create as young artists.
They will learn that dedication, hard work and creativity can lead to successful results that will let others know what they are capable of doing and what they have learned as artists. The culminating art auction event will be a symbol of their achievement.
