As a seventh grade social studies teacher in a low income area, I often find that the boundaries of the world surrounding my students are narrow. In attempting to bring the wide world to my students, it is often a struggle to make relevant something that seems so far removed. Knowing that many students will not be fortunate enough to experience traveling and exploration, I often use art as a method of teaching. Allowing students to create these countries, cultures and images that I am bringing them helps the students reach beyond the mountains of Appalachia. Resources as simple as markers, colored pencils, colored paper and scissors help bring to life something that may only exist in text books. These resources allow for hands-on learning and stimulate student creativity. In a large, diverse school such as this, my sixty students could only benefit through proper resources that the school, nor myself could provide.
