This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm a shop teacher, who has a theory about education. Education works best when it's kinetic; when students are moving. One of the reasons shop classes are so popular is because students are using both sides of their brains. This is in contrast to core classes where students are relatively inactive.

My theory is that combining literature with art will make the experience kinetic, and that students will be more engaged.

Starting next school year, my school will be going to late start scheduling every Monday; every Monday will be a shortened schedule for our students.

And... As a shop teacher, shorter class periods are really counter productive.

Also... Eighty percent of my students are Hispanic; immigrant children. They don't have books at home. They don't have the same background in literature that you and I have.

My project is to use Monday's shortened classes to read short stories to my students, and they are to interact with the story by writing a few sentences and drawing a picture. My theory is that the act of drawing will improve their learning experience.

I have already consulted with English language art teachers to assemble a list of short stories.

I have consulted with the art department on which are the preferred sketchbooks and colored pencils.

Our American culture is the collection of stories. Wonderful stories. I don't want that to be lost.

If I were to tell my students that a certain situation is "The Emperor's New Clothes", they won't have any idea what I'm talking about. Or "All animals are equal. Just some are more equal than others". These are expressions from literature that will be lost for my students.

So... for 30 minutes each week, I plan on reading and my students to be listening, writing and drawing.
