My students need art supplies such as brushes, modeling clay, paint, easels, and canvases to express their creativity. I would like to teach a hand-over-hand sensory art class for individuals who are severely impacted by autism.
My students are incredible people, deep thinkers, and sensory masters. I am a high school SPED teacher with a class of eight wonderful individuals with autism. My students are so creative, and I really want to set up a classroom where they can express their creativity.
We are all about color and texture.
In our classroom we are all set up with sensory fidgets, mood lighting, aromatherapy, and therapeutic meditation, and while that's all great for maintaining a zen-like classroom, there are moments where the need to express is too great to contain. Sometimes we have to stop what we're doing to break into song!
My students are future animators, excelling in recreating their favorite animated characters, and hilariously wonderful voice-actors.
My Project
These are supplies will enable me to teach a hand-over-hand sensory art class for students who are severely impacted by Autism. We will learn about local artists from our area and attempt to replicate their work. Replicated work will be shown around campus, and a gallery will be installed in the classroom.
We will use modeling and hand-over-hand to help students focus on their dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
It will also be a great opportunity to work on social communication goals in a large group setting. Other students from our two other Moderate/Severe classrooms will be invited to participate as well. So supplies will be used to build an art curriculum for a total of 20 students.
These items will help me:
Structure my class like a studio art class with options for each student to work on their own ideas, and assess skill levels. For example: easels will be placed around the classroom to give it that studio feel, while paintbrushes can be taped to broom-handles to help those with fine motor needs.
The paints, paint-pens, markers, and pencils will enable me to start my first class with a simple project: something simple like an abstract design using color, lines, and shapes.
Over time, we will graduate to canvas and acrylics, replicating fine-art masterpieces for the school community to enjoy!
