Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." -Ignacio 'Nacho' Estrada
This quote holds true for me, which is why I choose to incorporate Project Based Learning into what I'm teaching. It truly makes a difference in how much they learn and retain!
I have 19 students.
Eleven of them are ESOL students. I have one student coded for speech. I have two students who are new to our county and state. My school has a 59.7% FARMS rate. 30.6% of the students are ESOL students. 11.4% of the students are Special Ed students.
My Project
Part of the Project Based Learning experience is giving choices to the students. The students choose how they are going to create their project so I try to have all sorts of art materials for them to use.
This spring, my students will be creating a rainforest. My class has created a rainforest 3 years in a row. This year's rainforest will be bigger than ever before! Imagine trees in the middle of the classroom with birds on branches and monkeys swinging around! All sorts of trees, plants, and animals will be in this rainforest classroom.
This can't happen without the use of paper, glue, colored pencils, markers, craft sticks, wiggly eyes, craft dowels, and more. These items will help them create their rainforest!
The containers will be used to store all of the opened art supplies.
Having these items will help my students create their rainforest.
By making this rainforest and giving rainforest tours to their families and other students and staff in the school, my students will understand the layers of the rainforest, the animals who live there, where the animals live, what the animals eat, the plants and flowers in the rainforest, and so much more!
