We are already seeing such a positive impact in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe bean bag chair has become the perfect calm-down spot, giving students a comfortable place to regulate their emotions. With 13 students, our classroom can also get quite noisy, so the noise-canceling headphones have been especially helpful. The weighted butterfly blanket and body socks give our students additional ways to meet their individual sensory needs.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened recently when an upset student went to the calm-down corner, sat in the bean bag chair, and used the weighted butterfly blanket along with a sensory bottle. With these supports, he was able to calm himself independently. Seeing my students start to go to our calm down corner on their own has been a joy!\r\n\r\nWe truly love these materials. I keep the iPad with me throughout the entire school day, and consistently model and encourage my students to use their voices in natural settings. During arrival, students can say \"hello\" and \"how are you?\" During instruction, I model words as I teach and give directions. Even at recess, we use the device to communicate words such as \"go,\" \"stop,\" \"run,\" \"go up,\" and \"go down.\"\r\n\r\nAs a result of this project, I have learned how important it is to model AAC consistently. Now, I am realizing that communication needs to be part of all of the teachable moments; especially the difficult ones. It has also made learning to communicate fun!\r\n\r\nI am so excited to see the progress my students will make in their communication skills throughout this school year. The students were so excited to see all the new and different reward choices. I could tell by their faces that this was going to be just what I needed to keep my students on track and focused.\r\n\r\nEach student can earn a star each day we have interventions. In order to earn a star, the student must focused and actively participating throughout the lesson. Upon receiving 10 stars, a student gets to select a prize from the prize box. Students get so excited when they receive 10 stars. In addition, students are excited to see their peers get 10 starts and that motivates them to get there too! Students will often tell me how many more stars they need to get in order to get to 10.\r\n\r\nSince the introduction of the new prizes, my intervention students have been much more focused and motivated. So far we have used it to create jack-o-lanterns, gingerbread houses, airplanes, and 3D shapes. Students are amazed how easy it is to cut and build with cardboard. \r\n\r\nStudents have also been using the cardboard tool and fasteners. The screws and propellers have been a big hit. Students have been able to create more complex designs like the airplane and have a moving part (propeller).
