Art Supplies for Low Income Students

My Students

Our school is a low-income, Title I community with approximately 300 students of all abilities and levels. We have a high number of students from trauma and adverse childhood experiences whose social-emotional needs are positively influenced by making art, designing and building, hands-on, project-based learning. Our students have tested quite low in literacy and we are working school-wide in all grades to integrate literacy into nearly everything we do.

Making art is something that everyone can be successful in; it helps kids release stress, process their emotions, and have positive outlets for pent-up energy.

Art education is a powerful place to practice SEL (social-emotional learning) along with growth mindset development, especially during this global pandemic. I am working on incorporating literacy and social-emotional work into all of our art projects this year. Additionally, I embed S.T.E.A.M. activities into their art projects all throughout the year.

My Project

This project is ongoing in our art studio and makerspace. The items requested here are either needed to complete projects that are already started, or are items on our student-driven wish list. The items requested here are art materials and supplies which are above and beyond the capacity of the school budget.

Most students thrive in the creative space of our art room, as they get choice in what they are making, and are therefore more deeply invested in their own individualized project-based learning.

Students are motivated and engaged, they help each other and gain confidence, they are increasing their fine motor skills, adaptability and flexibility through creative thinking, revisions, and perseverance.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
