My students need a variety of art supplies and collage materials such as paint, construction paper, collage boards and blank sketch books for the art studio.
My favorite quote connected to this project is “Creativity takes courage.” by Henri Matisse. It relates to this project because if children learn how to be creative then they learn how to make mistakes, and trust their decisions.
The school I teach at is a small school in the city with a diverse population.
My students are first graders that really enjoy creating things in the classroom. They love using the easel in the classroom, and would really benefit from the opportunity to use collage materials to create projects connected to the curriculum.
My Project
I am planning an animal nonfiction unit for my first graders that connects all components of the literacy block. In addition to reading and writing about animals, students will use the various art materials in the Art Studio to make their animals. First they will create a plan that identifies the materials they need and how they will use the materials. Students may work in pairs, small groups or independently to create their animals. Later in the unit they will also use the Art Studio materials when they create posters they create in their groups. At the end of the unit students will share what they learned about the animals they studied during an end of unit animal museum.
This donation will expand students thinking, and improve my classroom since it will provide students the opportunity to use art materials to create.
Students will be engaged in making their animals, and at the same time they will be talking with classmates about the animals they create. In addition the art studio will become a center in the classroom where students continue to have the opportunity to create and discuss concepts they are learning about in a engaging center
