Art & Science Meets Batik &Tie-Dye

Help me give my students the art, science and history of dyeing and designing clothes, with contemporary resources!

This project expired on May 17, 2022.

My Students

My students are highly creative and interested in making art. They are really looking forward to working a variety of material. My students are motivated by projects that have a tie to real world ideas, and enjoy working as a team, as well as individually.

The students are lively, energetic, interested in new topics and materials, and resilient.

Many of them are dually interested in sports, school and art, making the group a dynamic class to teach.

As the students' interest in art and knowledge-base widens they are taking art more seriously and understanding how this subject can open up possibilities to their futures. I would like to provide more special materials to equal this enthusiasm.

My Project

This project is singularly unique as students will have the experience of learning about dyeing fabrics through both the vehicles of art and science. We will be having our students learn the science (with their science teacher!) behind how historically people developed methods to be able to be change clothing color. Students will learn about dyeing cloth with plants, minerals, and it's true, mushrooms, and then dye their own creations with our supplies! With their art teacher, learners will study various cultural techniques, the meaning and importance behind clothing, patterns and symbols depending on the culture, and of course will then also carefully craft their own Batik art.

Understanding how people altered and developed color dye to clothes will allow history, people, art and science to come alive for students.

Learners will study various historical and artistic methods in which different cultures utilized to develop unique methods of clothing dyeing including Batik and Shibori dyeing. Everything students learn will also align in some way with 5th grade's curriculum,-(crushed purple mollusks were among the first popular fabric dying technique?!) We anticipate that the tee shirts, dye and creatively educational immersion from multiple directions will leave a long lasting experience for our students.
