I am the art teacher to over 600 students in grades K-6th. Art means so much to my students because many of them come from low income backgrounds where creative expression has to take a backseat due to necessity, and when they come to art, they get that chance. I only see my students for only 40 minutes a week, and every minute counts. When my students enter the classroom, I need a few minutes of their undivided attention to explain our lesson and procedures. Having all my students in one spot really helps us maximize our time together, so they can get the chance to really immerse themselves in their work and express themselves in a truly creative way.
This rug will play many roles in my art classroom. It will primarily be the place where all my lessons will begin and end. It will also be a comfortable place for them to sit when we have flexible seating time during independent creation. It will be at the center of my classroom and will be an important fixture in my art classroom.
We currently have an old dirty puzzle mat that only the younger students have room to sit on.
My goal with this new rug is create a new sense of community in my art classroom where students can be creative and thrive.
