Art of Mexico and Day of the Dead

My students need tempera and watercolor paints, glitter, scratch board, air dry clay, felt and wire to make "tree of life" decorations for classroom walls.

I am an art and arts integration teacher responsible for instructing art lessons that incorporate reading, math, science and social studies and also assisting teachers to incorporate the arts into everyday instruction in the same core subject areas. I teach at a level 5 special education center for emotionally disturbed elementary school students from all over a high poverty urban school district.

Our school district has recently faced funding cuts and has responded with fair student funding. As we are a special education center with a small population, this does not always leave us a lot of budget space for art supplies. This year I wrote grants to support an in depth study of Japanese art and culture and students thrived while learning about another culture, building visual thinking skills as well as design skills. We celebrated with a Japanese New Years Tea Party.

I would love to continue the success of the in depth cultural study units in the art class and focus on Mexico next fall. Students will develop skills in sculpture and patterning while learning some Spanish language, identify parts of Mexico on a map, and celebrate with the Mexican festival of Day of the Dead just in time for Halloween! I need funding for supplies for us to create large tree of life murals, paper mache pinatas and skeletons, wrestling masks, Oaxaca animal sculptures and images, and other thematic objects for a full environmental experience. We will celebrate with a Day of the Dead community celebration complete with thematic music, activities, movies and snacks. Please help this other country come alive for my urban students!

Please help me to inspire my students to think about other cultures and to connect what they learn in school to the larger world. The art classroom is a wonderful window to the outside world for my inner city students. Hands on activities and imaginative problem solving are very therapeutic for my students, who suffer from emotional disturbances. I would like to inspire them to transform the school environment for this special event and help to empower them to use their imaginations for positive change!
