Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an art teacher in a high need elementary school. My students work very hard and are happy despite their economic disadvantage. Our students love being in school and the teachers do whatever they can to improve their learning experience.
Our school is located in a high poverty area and many of our students live in the neighboring housing projects.
We always have high attendance and the students are excited to learn and explore new subjects in the arts and literacy. The students at our school may not have the same opportunities as many NYC students; but there is a team of hard working teachers bridging that gap. I want the students to have a quality art education and the requested supplies would help our students achieve their best work.
My Project
The public schools have cut budgets and the arts have been hit very hard. I have a wonderful art room but not many supplies. My students love coming to art class and I am trying to make the best with the little I have in my closet. I need Chinese rice paper and mask forms to help the students make connections to their current curriculum. My third graders are studying China and will use the rice paper to create hand scrolls and hanging scrolls using the Chinese calligraphy and painting styles. My fourth graders study many cultures that use mask making as a form of expression. We will use the mask forms to create masks and explore how Native Americans and cultures in Africa have used this art form.
