My Project

The end of the year is an emotional and very exciting time. FINALLY, the students know how the classroom works, they are progressing in their learning, and they know each other like brothers and sisters. They are ready to move to first grade!

At the end of the year, once the assessments are over and we have completed our lessons, we like to explore the 7 continents of the world in our Magic Carpet unit.

While on our world tour, my Owls complete activities in all content areas, and there is a heavy emphasis on art. All of the materials in this project will be used to display projects for the Savannah and Victoria Falls in Africa, Mt. Everest in Asia, The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and the Kelp Forests of the Pacific Ocean. We take a trip to the Amazon Rain Forest in South America, and even come back to our home to learn about the habitats and animals that live in our backyards. While in each continent, we learn about a variety of artists and their styles of art, then we try their techniques ourselves.

This is a highly engaging unit during a very exciting time of the year. It also keeps us busy and keeps me from crying at the thought of my students leaving. By this time of the year, they have all earned a special place in my heart.
