This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the art teacher at a inner city public, Montessori school. I teach 509 students from ages 3 to 12. Our school population is 67% low income and represents a variety of races and cultures. This is the first year we have had an art program in over 6 years, due to previous budget cuts.
Our school budget is limited for art supplies and our student body is large. Currently, the elementary students in grades 1-6 are using home made sketch books using recycled copy paper. Although this was a creative solution to our problem, it is not the best. The images from the old notices and work sheets can be seen through the children's art and the paper itself does not take many mediums well. In addition, the floppy backing does not allow for mobility and sketching in a variety of locations is difficult.
We have a school of very motivated educators and students. Our school is located in the downtown area of our city and we are walking distance from a river as well as local museums. Teachers enjoy creating a lively learning experience by bringing students to these places to study topics covered in the classroom. Having legitimate, quality sketch books would allow me to broaden their classroom experience by incorporating sketching of these locations as well as other art projects to increase their knowledge on the topics they are learning. In addition, having a sketch book with a higher quality paper would allow students to use a larger variety of mediums and take pride in their artwork.
My students would appreciate your donation more than you can imagine. Your donation would increase their motivation and make them feel valued.
