Art History for Children

My students need art history DVDs.

If you cannot draw from history’s past your life will be very sketchy. My students do not understand what role art has played in the past. They do not comprehend the social, political, emotional and economic position that art plays in their present and their future. I teach art and drama to grades K-12 in a very “at risk” area. My school is in a transient town with a high meth-addicted population and an over 50% high school dropout rate. I have kindergarteners that the first crayons they have ever seen are the ones I give them. I have high school students who only attend their other classes because we offer art. As an example, I have one student who stays each day to do art till after 5 pm so she does not have to go home and get ‘high’ with her dad before he goes to work. I make use out of everything I can get my hands on. I spend many weekends at yard sales and flea markets and have spent more of my own money than I want to count. It is great that the school supports the arts by employing me but that means there is no budget left for books. I have used the internet and personal resources to compile art history data. However, having written supplies will make it easier to present the material in a way they can follow. Also, viewing the DVD’s will bring art to life in a visual way. Art history is just more than what artist painted what picture. It is a reflection of what was happening in the world at that time. I wish I could describe how much your gift would mean. Letting children know about history lets them escape, dream and plan for the future. It is well documented that the arts improve every aspect of their academic pursuits. The study of art history gives them a connection to the past. Most of my student’s have moved five times by the sixth grade. Letting them connect to the past through art history will give them an anchor throughout their uncertain future.
