I work with a wide-spectrum of students who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ranging from grades Kindergarten-Second Grade. This is a full day Specialized Program containing 6 students in Kindergarten and First Grade. This program is at a brand new school in the Henderson, NV area.
Autism is a developmental disorder of brain function characterized by three major types of symptoms: impaired social interactions, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication and unusual or severely limited activities and interests.
My students do best in an environment that is structures and routine based. They are amazing little learners. To see the world through their eyes is such a special thing.
My Project
My classroom is made up of students on the autism spectrum. Many of the things we do in the classroom are supported by art and encouraged to explain or describe their thoughts and ideas. For some of my students, art is an outlet that allows them to engage in academics but also creative expression. It is a time they can work independently and express themselves with details and fun activities.
Art provides expression that often can't be vocalized.
I love that so many of my children enjoy art and use it as a form of expression. For my students, are can also be an outlet that provides them calming supports and strategies at school and in the classroom. Paint supplies, aprons, craft paper, and wiki sticks are just a few items that would enrich our classroom and the experiences of our students.
