Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a world where technology is the dominating force, and art takes a backseat in school curriculums for science and math, I want to be able to bring art to my students. So many politicians don't realize how interconnected art and math truly are. According to PBS.org, "...many of the core skills in art and math are closely related. Both disciplines require spatial reasoning skills and the ability to recognize patterns. Artists and mathematicians use geometry in their work — including shapes, symmetry, proportion, and measurement." Most of my third-grade students live in rural California and have migrant parents who work in the fields, just like me growing up. Most of my kids have never been to a museum or have learned about art. These kids don't have the opportunity to randomly go to their public library and discover art like my late brother did and fall in love with it. I want them to be able to learn about art in a safe place, like school.

I want to cover three artists: Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, and Frida Kahlo.

The kids will learn about each of these artists via kid-friendly YouTube videos and will later make a piece of art that emulates the artists' work.

For Pablo Picasso, I want the kids to do a self-portrait on cardstock using pastels. For Vincent Van Gogh, I want them to paint "Starry Night" using acrylic paint and chalk on canvas. Finally, for Frida Kahlo, I want the kids to decorate a flower pot with acrylic paint and tissue paper.

I am an English teacher in a dual-language program, so I have two groups of students.
